Rediscovering Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s birthplace

Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took birth at Sri Dham Mayapur, 540 years ago. When he performed his pastimes and disappeared from this planet, every place connected to him was lost. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur took responsibility for excavating the birthplace of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Different people gave different opinions about the birthplace, but Bhaktivinoda Thakur was determined to find the actual place.

One day, Bhaktivinoda Thakur was sitting on the roof of Rani Dharmasala (Navadvipa) spotted a glaring effulgence coming out from a tall palm tree. The locals told him that it is the same birthplace of Lord Chaitanya, pointing towards the mound covered with the Tulasi plant. He began searching the Vedic scriptures to reach a conclusion.

He found the following verse in Bhakti-ratnākara, which confirmed his discovery.

navadvipa madhye mayapura name sthān
yathāya janmilen gauracandra bhagavān

“In the centre of Navadvipa, there is a place called Mayapura. At this place, the Supreme Lord Gauracandra took His birth.”

To confirm his finding, he requested Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj to visit that place. Babaji Maharaj was 142 years old and unable to walk, carried in a basket by his disciple. When Babaji Maharaj spotted that place, he jumped in ecstasy and said aloud, “ei to ‘nimāi-janma-bhūmi!” (This is the birthplace of Nimai (Lord Chaitanya). Till today, people worship the Lord Gauranga here and this Holy place, Mayapura.

Bhaktivinoda Thakur's Prayer Answered

By the mercy of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, this Krishna Consciousness movement was going nicely. People were following his teachings and felt transcendental ecstasy during sankirtan. After His disappearance, the six Goswamis carried forward this movement. The Goswamis excavated places associated with Lord Krishna’s pastimes and deities like Govinddev ji and Madan Mohan ji.

When the Goswamis disappeared, things deteriorated, and people began to forget the actual teachings. The so-called devotees were taking things very easily ( are called Prākṛta-sahajiyā) by their own whims. Deeply pained by the decline of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Bhaktivinoda Thakur earnestly prayed to Lord Chaitanya to send someone to revive the movement.

On the 6th of February 1874, a baby boy was born in Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s house. His name was Bimala Prasāda, later named Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. He was the mercy representation of Lord Chaitanya.

The Rath Yatra Festival was held in Jagannath Puri, and the boy was 6 months old. The big cart of Lord Jagannath stopped in front of their house. His mother took the opportunity and placed the child on the leg of Lord Jagannath. Immediately, a flower garland fell on the child and it was a sign of special mercy. Bhaktivinoda Thakur could understand that this child was not ordinary; the Lord had sent this child to him.

Punishing a pseudo yogi

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur was the magistrate of Jagannath Puri, located in Orissa (known as Utkal at that time). There was a custom that the local magistrate would manage the Jagannath Temple. In a village, there was a pseudo yogi declaring himself to be an incarnation of god. He used to dance with girls and call himself Lord Vishnu.

Bhaktivinoda Thakur, as he is a pure devotee, could easily understand that this rascal is a bogus man who cheats people. With some constables, he went to that village in a plain dress. The Yogi said, “Oh, you Kedarnath Datta, I will make you king of the country, you don't try to bother me.” Bhaktivnod Thakur replied, “Sir, why don’t you go to Jagannath Puri and live happily?”

This foolish yogi said, "Oh, Jagannātha? It is made of wood; I am the Lord. On hearing this, Bhaktivinoda Thakur became furious and ordered his constables to arrest this rascal; the pseudo yogi was arrested. A real devotee cannot tolerate the blasphemy of the Lord and devotees.

The yogi possessed mystic powers; all the constables, Bhaktivinoda Thakur and his family members were infected with high fever. On returning home, his wife said that because you have arrested him, we are all going to die. Bhaktivinoda Thakur replied, “Let us all die, but this rascal must be punished.”

A date was fixed for Yogi’s trial, and he was presented before Bhaktivinoda Thakur. The yogi had long hair, which was ordered to be cut, but no one dared to cut his hair out of fear. Bhaktivinoda Thakur personally cut his hair and ordered him to be put into jail for six months. The yogi who was famous as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu took poison and died.
