History of Radha Madan Mohan Ji Temple ​The Shri Radha Madan Mohan Temple in Vrindavan holds an extraordinary place in history as the oldest surviving temple structure in the region. While popular lore traces the origin of the core deity back 5,000 years to Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, its modern history dates back to the 16th century, closely intertwined with the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. ​The original deity of Madan Mohan (initially known as Madana Gopala) was rediscovered by Advaita Acharya at the base of an ancient banyan tree (Advaita Vata) at the foot of the hill. He eventually entrusted the deity to Sanatana Goswami, one of the prominent Six Goswamis sent by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to reclaim the holy land of Vrindavan. Sanatana Goswami established the worship in a small, humble hut atop the Dvadasaditya Tila (hill) overlooking the Yamuna River. ​The grand temple structure was built around 1580 AD. According to tradition, a wealthy merchant from Multan named Kapur Ram Das (or Krishnadas Kapoor) was transporting salt on a commercial barge that ran aground in the Yamuna River near the hill. Under Sanatana Goswami’s guidance, he prayed to Madan Mohan for help. The boat miraculously cleared, and the massive profits generated from the venture were dedicated entirely to constructing this magnificent monument. ​Later, during the fanatical campaign of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1670 AD, the temple was targeted and desecrated. To ensure the ultimate safety of the sacred idols, the original deities of Madan Mohan, Radha, and Lalita Gopi were secretly smuggled overnight to Jaipur and eventually permanently relocated to Karauli, Rajasthan, where they reside today. In 1748 AD, a sacred replica (Pratibhu-vigraha) was consecrated at the Vrindavan site. Finally, in 1819 AD, a prominent zamindar named Nanda Kumar Basu built a new temple structure at the base of the hill to house the ongoing daily worship.

Situated at the top of a mountain, the temple is very peaceful and has a big open space inside. I spent a fine evening here in remembrance of my Shri Thakur ji 💕 attending evening aarti. You will see the monkeys sitting around but they are harmless 🐒🐒🐒 You can bring some fruits and nuts for them.. this will make Shri Thakur ji very happy 🥰 The temple is the oldest temple and the first temple of Vrindavan. ❤️ I highly recommend to come here during the evening aarti which happens around 6pm.
