Life and Teachings of Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji

Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji was born on November 17, 1838 in West Bengal. This region has a sacred history of producing many great saints in Vaishanava tradition.

From his early life, he started to attract Lord Krishna's devotion. He used to live a sattvic and isolated life. It was a noble way of living a lifestyle, just as suggested by great saints in Vaishanavism.

His whole-day routine was centered around chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra:

"Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare"

He was living nearby Ganaga river in a small hut. He spent his hours following the instruction of his spiritual master, Srila Jagannatha Dasa Babaji, which were:

i) Chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra

ii) Living a sattvic life

iii) Perform Harinam Sankirtan

iv) Promoting Krishna consciousness

He has struggled for basic requirements to live a life. Still, he never gave up on his determination to spread Harinam Sankirtan and reach to the higher levels in Krishna Consciousness.

One of his biggest contributions was carrying forward the mission of Lord Chaitanaya Mahaprabhu, spreading Krishna Consciousness. He has initiated Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, spiritual master of His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Significance of His Disappearance Day

In Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, the disappearance day is used to remember the contributions of acharyas in Krishna Consciousness. Devotees do not mourn on this day as they believe that the acharyas live forever in their teachings/ Books.
This disappearance day of Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji reflects their devotional and simple life that he spent serving the instructions of His spiritual master, carrying forward the mission of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Lessons and Inspiration for Today’s Devotees

Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji has inspired many devotees before and after his departure from this world. He has taught many things to the one who has started the journey in Krishna Consciousness.

1) Never forget your duty:

Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji has lived a very unstable lifestyle. He used to beg for food to seven houses in Vraj.

There were some days when he had nothing, so he ate some mud from nearby Ganga river to focus on His spiritual practices.

Lesson: He left a message that there will be some days when one may struggle through basic necessities as a devotee.

However, one must refuse to give up practicing and spreading the holy names of Lord Krishna. This is their one and the only duty as a devotee.

2) Learn to be dependent on Lord Krishna:

Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji has lived a life of what Lord Krishna provided. He never desired for the things that one requires to live through a life as per the society.

He always chants Haare Krishna Mahamantra without a single break. His faith upon Lord Krishna and the determination to follow his spiritual master was unshakable.

Lesson: Today's time is more distracting than the time of Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji. Lacking focus and getting doubts upon the Lord's way of doing things is very common.

To stay safe from these doubts and distractions, one must learn to perform their duty without worrying about how he/she will have the food, clothes, and other material requirements.

3) One preaching could change the world:

Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji was preaching the holy name of Lord Krishna. One day, he met Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, a magistrate and the father of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura later initiated His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the global influencer of Krishna Consciousness.

Lesson: One must never stop preaching the Krishna Consciousness. Your one contribution can change thousands to million lives. Taking a soul back to Lord Krishna is the highest service towards Him.

Note: Other than preaching, Donation is considered as the highest service towards Lord Krishna.

Visit Gupt Vrindavan Dham and donate for Anna Daan seva, Gau seva, Mandir Nirman seva, and other temple services.

Your humble contribution will ease your soul to recognize the presence of Lord Krishna in your life.

Conclusion

The life lessons of Srila Gaura Kishora Dasa Babaji will always stay in the hearts of pure devotees. He will inspire everyone who comes in contact to his devoted life journey.

Let's honor his devotion by taking the blessings of Lord Krishna, engage in Harinam Sankirtan, chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra, and donate some help for Mother cows and poor people.
