The water of Govind Kund is considered sacred because it came from Lord Krishna’s abhishek with milk and Ganges water. Knowing its story, location, and significance will help you visit this holy place with greater understanding and devotion.

Where Is Govind Kund Located?

Govind Kund is located at the foot of Govardhan Hill, on the edge of Aniyora village in the Mathura region of Uttar Pradesh. This rectangular pond covers approximately 1.85 acres. During Govardhan Parikrama, devotees stop here for darshan and sit together to hear the story of Govind Kund.

Govind Kund Story and Significance

The story of Govind Kund is deeply connected with Lord Krishna’s Govardhan Lila. When the residents of Vrindavan followed Krishna’s advice to worship Govardhan Hill instead of Indra, the king of heaven became angry and sent Samvartak cloud to flood the village. To protect His beloveds, Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill for seven days until the rain ended.

Realising his mistake, Indra approached Krishna to beg forgiveness. When Mother Surabhi bathed Lord Krishna with milk, He became pleased, as cows are very dear to Him. Then Indra bathed Him with Ganges water brought in the trunk of his elephant, Airavata.

During the abhishek of Lord Krishna, He was honoured with the name Govinda. Recognising Him as one who gives protection and pleasure to the cows. The demigods from the sky showered flowers, the Gandharvas played music for His pleasure, and sages offered prayers.

Govind Kund signifies Lord Krishna’s loving protection of His devotees and cows. It marks the sacred place where Indra and Mother Surabhi performed His abhishek and honoured Him as Govinda, the Lord of the cows.

This pastime also signifies the importance of humility. Indra’s surrender reminds devotees to give up false pride and take shelter of Lord Krishna.

Conclusion

Govind Kund reminds us of Lord Krishna’s mercy, His love for the cows, and His protection of the residents of Braj. When you visit this sacred pond during Govardhan Parikrama, remember His abhishek as Govinda and offer your prayers with a humble heart.
