Lord Krishna's Govardhan Lila
Govardhan Lila
In order to establish the righteous principles and destroy the false pride of Lord Indra, Lord Sri Krishna performed the wonderful pastime of offering worship to cows and Govardhan Hill and lifting the Govardhan Hill.
When the elderly cowherd men were arranging for a sacrifice to be offered to Lord Indra in order to please him for the regular supply of rains, Lord Sri Krishna suggested to worship cows and Govardhan Hill instead. On Krishna’s convincing they worshiped Giriraj Govardhan, who is non-different from Lord Himself and observed the festival of Govardhan Puja.
When Lord Indra saw the negligence of his worship, he became angry and tried to submerge Vrindavan with the devastating rainfall of Samvartaka clouds and thunderstorms. Lord Sri Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his finger and saved the residents from all disturbances. After seven days Indra accepted his defeat and stopped the rain, Lord Krishna safely arranged everything as before and protected everyone. Everyone sang the praises of the Lord.
In this way Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead performed His beautiful pastime of Lifting Govardhan Hill and broke the false pride of Lord Indra. Lord Krishna is also known by the name Giridhari, the lifter of Govardhan Hill.
