Lord Dhanvantari is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is considered one of the demigods. He emerged during Samudra Manthan, honored as the Lord of Ayurveda and medicine, who quickly cures diseases and gives a long life. The Srimad Bhagavatam briefly describes Lord Dhanvantari's appearance, bodily features, and attributes. Hearing these descriptions is especially pleasing because they reveal His direct connection with Lord Vishnu.
Lord Dhanvantari’s Appearance During Samudra Manthan
By the curse of Durvasa Muni, the demigods became weak and were defeated by the demons. The demigods then approached Lord Brahma and together prayed to Lord Vishnu for protection. Lord Vishnu instructed them to form a temporary alliance with the demons and churn the ocean of milk to obtain nectar.
While churning the Mandara Mountain with the help of Vasuki, different personalities came out, which were taken by either demigods or demons. Finally, a very beautiful personality with a blackish complexion and fully decorated with various ornaments appeared. He was Lord Dhanvantari, carrying a jug full of nectar in his hands. Upon seeing the nectar, the demons immediately snatched the nectar away by force.
Lord Vishnu, who is the ever-well-wisher of His devotees, then assumed the form of an extremely beautiful woman named Mohini. Her enchanting beauty captivated all the demons, and they willingly handed the pot of nectar to her. They trusted her that she would distribute it equally among the demigods and demons. However, by a trick, she gave the nectar only to the demigods. The demons remained so bewildered by her beauty that they simply watched as the demigods received and drank the nectar.
His Connection with Lord Vishnu
The various incarnations of the Supreme Lord manifest different qualities and appear for particular purposes. Lord Dhanvantari appeared as the twelfth incarnation of a plenary portion of Lord Vishnu. He emerged carrying the pot of nectar and introduced the science of Ayurveda for the benefit of the living entities. Although the Supreme Lord possesses all powers in full, His different incarnations manifest only as much power as is required to fulfil the specific purpose of their appearance.
Lord Dhanvantari and Ayurveda
Everything emanates from the Personality of Godhead, and certainly the medical science or knowledge in medicine was also inaugurated by Lord Vishnu in His incarnation Dhanvantari. That knowledge is safely recorded in the Vedas for the perfect cure of the diseases of the living entity. Everyone is diseased; the disease may differ from one variety to another, but no one is free from it. By the grace of Lord Dhanvantari, not only the diseases of the body and mind are cured, but also the soul is relieved from the repetition of birth and death.
His Connection with Dhanteras
Dhanteras is commonly associated with wealth and prosperity, but the appearance of Lord Dhanvantari falling on the same day made this occasion very auspicious. When the Lord incarnates in the material world, the whole atmosphere becomes auspicious. People gather all valuable items like gold and silver, and everyone celebrates that day with great enthusiasm.
Thus, the appearance of Lord Dhanvantari gives Dhanteras a deeper meaning, reminding us that true prosperity is not limited to wealth but also includes good health and a long, healthy life.
Conclusion
The appearance of Lord Vishnu as Dhanvantari shows His compassion for the suffering living entities, who came with the gift of nectar and the science of Ayurveda. He not only mitigates the sufferings of the body but also the repetition of birth and death. As everyone in this material world is more or less suffering, one should take shelter of the Lord Vishnu either directly or through His incarnations.
