Whenever there’s talk about true friendship, Lord Krishna and Sudama’s friendship stands out as the purest and ideal. This is a selfless bonding with eternal love; it is a relationship beyond judgements, conditions, expectations, etc. Such friendship is untouched by the dirt of people’s negative or wrong opinions. This is a divine tale of Lord Krishna and His beloved childhood friend, Sudama.
Childhood Days of Krishna and Sudama Friendship
Sudama, also known as Kuchela, was born in a Brahman family. He grew up in a financially unstable condition with an insufficient amount of food and water. Despite his condition, he learned scriptures and Vedic Knowledge in the Gurukul of Sage Sandipani.
During his student days, he met with Lord Krishna, who was of his age and studying there. They built a pure bond that was based upon love, respect, and spiritual values.
Even though they studied together in the same gurukul, Lord Krishna became the King of Dwarka, and Sudama continued his simple brahminic life with a wife and children.
Their divine friendship started at the Gurukul of Sage Sandipani, where Lord Krishna and Suhama were students. They spent a lot of time together – reading scriptures, eating food, playing games, and talking.
One day, their guru commanded them to gather some firewood, but the weather started to change as soon as they entered the forests.
Despite the bad weather, Lord Krishna and Sudama followed the command of their guru. They were all wet, shivering from the cold, and still searching for the wood with each other’s support. This moment was a strong test for children, which they passed successfully.
Sudama’s Simple Life and Deep Devotion
After completing his education, Sudama continued to live a simple, brahmanical life. With a heart full of devotion and love, he sustained himself entirely on bhiksha. He always wore worn-out old clothes, and had a muddy and dark skin appearance. He and his entire family survived on a minimal amount of food, sometimes no food at all.
His simple life is glorified in Srimad Bhagavatam as:
श्रीशुक उवाच
कृष्णस्यासीत् सखा कश्चिद् ब्राह्मणो ब्रह्मवित्तम: ।
विरक्त इन्द्रियार्थेषु प्रशान्तात्मा जितेन्द्रिय: ॥ ६ ॥
Translation: Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Lord Kṛṣṇa had a certain brāhmaṇa friend [named Sudāmā] who was most learned in Vedic knowledge and detached from all sense enjoyment. Furthermore, his mind was peaceful and his senses subdued.
He chose this simple life not out of helplessness but to grow on the path of spirituality. To a non-devotee, his life may appear poor, helpless, and uncertain. But those with spiritual insight, this is the life with the highest purpose(worshipping the Lord). Sudama was living in the ecstasy of love for Lord Krishna. This is a pure state of love where you has no desires, jealousy, or envy, but only a longing for the Supreme Lord.
A Precious Gift of Flattened Rice
Although the wife and children of Sudama were devotees of Lord Krishna, they were nowhere near him. Seeing the continuous pain and suffering of her children and husband, Sudama ’s wife decided to talk to him. With all the ache and helplessness, Sudama ’s wife requested him to go to Dwarka and ask his beloved friend for financial support.
Sudama was not willing to do as his wife requested because Lord Krishna was his beloved childhood friend. And so he was not willing to take advantage of his pure friendship. But when he saw his wife and children in bad health, he decided to go.
It was Sudama ’s first time meeting Lord Krishna after Gurukul. But, to offer the Lord, they had no gift, not even any homemade recipe. Seeing this, his wife decided to borrow a handful of flattened rice(poha) from the neighborhood. At the time of Sudama ’s departure, she tied the poha in a piece of cloth and gave it to him.
When Lord Krishna, or at that time the King of Dwarka, heard the news of Sudama ’s arrival, He immediately ran barefoot to the palace’s main gate. Overwhelmed by love and happiness, he welcomed Sudama by washing his feet, hugging him with love. All the wives of Lord Krishna, including Queen Rukmini, were witnessing the ideal welcome of a poor brahmana.
Once, Lord Krishna and Sudama sat down and talked about their childhood memories. Lord Krishna asked him - Did you bring me anything?. Feeling embarrassed, Sudama was trying to hide the flattened rice, but the Lord saw it. He took the flattened rice and enjoyed the offering of his pure, dear devotee and friend, Sudama.
Lessons from the Krishna Sudama Story
1. A good heart is all that matters:
When Sudama arrived at Dwarka, he was wearing old and dirty clothes. Yet, the King of Dwarka, Lord Krishna, warmly welcomed him. It is because he had only selfless love and devotion for the Lord, in his heart, that the Lord saw through.
2. Humbleness is a rare quality:
Despite being a friend of the King of Dwarka, Sudama never exaggerated about this. He lived a simple life, focusing on devotion, without any arrogance or pride. Even after he received a luxurious life from the Lord, he continuously lived as a brahmana, while leaving his family with all the wealth. This shows the greatest level of humility that only a pure devotee of Lord Krishna can afford.
3. Real Friends Love Without Expectations:
Unlike today’s friendships, which are based on mutual benefits, Sudama ’s friendship was built on pure love and selfless devotion. When he visited Dwarka, he was not hoping for any financial support, but to meet his beloved friend and the Supreme Lord, Lord Krishna.
4. Even a simple gift from a friend is precious
In this beautiful friendship between the Lord and His devotee, there’s an unforgettable moment. It is the time when Lord Krishna accepted a handful of flattened rice from Sudama. He enjoyed it as the most delicious offering ever received. Through this pastime, the Lord proved that the love and intention behind the offering do matter, not the type of offering.
