How to Keep Janmashtami Fast (Step-by-Step Guide)

Observing the fast of Janmashtami is a way to purify the body, mind, and soul, and to connect with the Lord's divinity. But while keeping the fast, there is a procedure to follow to ensure your ritual is performed correctly and with full devotion.

  1. 01

    Morning Duties (Prataha-Kritya)

On the day of Janmashtami, you should wake up early in the morning before the sun rises (Brahma Muhurata). Just after waking up, chant a soulful devotional prayer to your spiritual master; if you have no one, chant Hare Krishna one time. After doing this, take a holy bath, wear fresh clothes, and apply tilaka on your face to foster devotion throughout the day.
  2. 02

    Mahā-Mantra Japa (Maha-mantra Meditation)

After getting dressed, go directly to your Puja altar, put on your mala beads, and chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra as much as you can. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Try to chant at least 108 times, completing 1 round if you are a beginner. However, it is advised to chant at least 16 rounds on the day of Janmashtami to attain peace and purity in your devotion towards the Lord.
  3. 03

    Krishna-Smarana (Remembering the Lord)

After chanting, you should at least listen to any one chapter or to any one glory or pastime story of the Supreme Lord Krishna. You can read scriptures like the Srimad Bhagavatam or the Bhagavad Gita As It Is, written by HDG A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. Hearing or attaining knowledge on the leelas of the Lord is believed to cleanse the material contamination and offer liberation to your soul.
  4. 04

    Upavasa (Fasting)

Now comes the major step of the day: you should observe the Janmashtami fast till midnight, then break it by having light foods like fruits, milk, or roots. Remember to abstain from grains, beans, and other vegetables throughout the day while observing the Janmashtami Vrat. Starting the fast should begin with taking a vow by your name, with reciting: For the appeasement and destruction of all sins, and with Lord Vasudeva (Krishna) as the supreme goal, I will observe this upavasa (fast) on the dark eighth day (Krishna Ashtami) of the month of Bhadrapada.
  5. 05

Charana Chinha (Marking the Lotus Feet of Lord Krishna)

Decorate on your own on the day of Janmashtami by marking Lord Krishna’s lotus footprints, signifying a divine pathway from your house entrance to the Puja altar, reflecting the Lord's arrival.
  6. 06

    Bhoga Preparation

For Krishna Janmashtami fasting, all bhog or naivedya items should be prepared using top-quality ingredients. All items, such as fruits, sweets, vegetables, and dry fruits, should be in good condition and edible. You can cook purely sattvik food without including onion or garlic as per your comfort on the day of Krishna Janmashtami. In Bhagavad Gita, the Lord himself says: If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it.
  7. 07

Worship of the Lord (Śrī-vigraha Seva)

After doing all this, if you have deities or Laddu Gopal (Baby Krishna) in your home or have Radha Krishna, worship them on the day of Janmashtami. Perform sacred abhishekam and offer new clothes accompanied by chanting of auspicious mantras or Hare Krishna kirtana.

Janmashtami Fast Rules You Must Follow

Janmashtami fasting should be observed with some general rules that make your observance clearer and ensure your blessings are not lacking.

  1. 01

    Maintain Purity of Mind

While keeping the Janmashtami fast, you should control your thoughts, avoid anger and gossip, and focus your mind on chanting and offering prayers to the Lord throughout the day.
  2. 02

    Avoid Breaking the Fast Early

To fully attain the benefits of Janmashtami fasting, avoid breaking the fast early; wait until midnight and break it according to correct Nishita Muhurat timings.
  3. 03

    Avoid Overeating After Fast

At the time of breaking the fast, start by eating small portions and eat only pure sattvic foods. Breaking a vrat after a whole day of fasting requires gentle care so your stomach can digest properly.
  4. 04

    Fast According to Capability

Janmashtami fasting is not a compulsory ritual to pay devotion to the Lord. It should be done according to capability (yathashakti), meaning according to the limits of your mental and physical health.
  5. 05

    Avoid Sleeping During the Day

On the day of Janmashtami, you should avoid sleeping during the day as it can distract your mind from observing the fast with purity; dedicate those hours to chanting and singing devotional songs of the Lord.
  6. 06

    Refrain from Materialistic Talks

Janmashtami is the divine day, so you should not engage in materialistic, worldly talk and should focus only on keeping Lord Krishna at the center of your mind.
  7. 07

    Maintain Cleanliness

Keeping the fast means attaining purity, so you should maintain cleanliness throughout your surroundings and altar space and wear fresh clothes before beginning your worship.
  8. 08

    Avoid Non-Devotional Entertainment

Last but not least, avoid non-devotional entertainment; do not watch TV or movies; instead, engage the whole day in kirtan, japa, or scripture reading.
