The story of Tulsi and Shaligram vivah is associated with Lord Vishnu being cursed by Vrinda Devi. Scriptures like the Devi Bhagavata Purana and Shiva Purana beautifully describe how Lord Vishnu accepted her curse and gave the benediction of being worshiped with her. Let us understand what caused her to curse Lord Vishnu, who was her worshipable Lord.

The Story of Tulsi and Shaligram

Vrinda Devi from Goloka Vrindavan has descended into this material world as Tulsi Devi. The Puranas describe the appearance of Tulsi through different sacred accounts, including the story of Tulsi and Shankhachuda and that of Vrinda and Jalandhara.

Marriage to Shankhachuda and the Shaligram Curse

King Vrishadhvaja was deeply devoted to Lord Shiva but had stopped the worship of other deities in his kingdom. This displeased the demigods, who cursed him to lose his wealth and prosperity.

Later, his grandsons, Dharmadhvaja and Kushadhvaja, worshipped Lakshmi Devi to restore their family’s fortune. Through her blessings, manifestations of Lakshmi appeared in their families: Tulsi as Dharmadhvaja’s daughter and Vedavati as Kushadhvaja’s daughter.

Tulsi left her royal comforts and went to Badrikashrama, where she performed severe penance to attain Lord Vishnu. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Brahma explained that she would first marry Shankhachuda and would later attain Lord Vishnu.

Tulsi married Shankhachuda, who could not be defeated as long as she remained faithful to him. During his war with the demigods, Lord Vishnu appeared before Tulsi in her husband’s form. Believing Him to be Shankhachuda, she welcomed Him as her husband, and Shankhachuda lost his protection. When Tulsi discovered the deception, she was filled with grief and anger. Feeling that Lord Vishnu’s heart was as hard as stone, she cursed Him to become stone.

Lord Vishnu told Tulsi that her wish to have Him as her husband would now come true. She would leave her earthly body, take a divine form, and become His wife.

He explained that her earthly body would become the sacred Gandaki River, and her hair would become the Tulsi plant. Accepting her curse, He would appear as Shaligram stones in the Gandaki region. Tulsi then took her divine form and went with Lord Vishnu to Vaikuntha.

Vrinda and Jalandhara: Another Scriptural Account

Vrinda was the daughter of Kalanemi and the wife of Jalandhara, an asura born from Lord Shiva’s fiery energy. She was deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu and faithful to her husband. Her faithfulness gave Jalandhara protection, making him difficult to defeat.

The demon Jalandhara became very puffed up with his strength and attempted to kidnap Mother Parvati. He fought with Lord Shiva, but due to his wife’s chastity, it was impossible to defeat him. To protect the demigods, Lord Vishnu went to Vrinda in the form of her husband.

Just by Lord Vishnu’s touch, her chastity was broken, and Lord Shiva was able to kill Jalandhar. When Vrinda discovered His true identity, she was filled with grief and anger. She cursed Lord Vishnu to become a stone. Vishnu accepted this curse, leading to His manifestation as Shaligram. She entered the fire and gave up her life. From her ashes, the holy Tulsi plant emerged and is worshipped along with Shaligram.
