Radha Ashtami Fasting Time

Srila Prabhupada explained that Radha Ashtami is observed by fasting until twelve noon. After the worship and food offering, devotees may complete the fast by honouring prasadam.

Radha Ashtami fasting does not ordinarily continue until midnight or the following day. Local temple schedules may differ, so devotees participating in temple programmes may follow the guidance provided by the temple authorities.

How to Observe the Radha Ashtami Fast

Observing this divine festival is a practice to reach toward the end stage of devotion, prema-bhakti. Here's a detail explanation of how you can observe the fasting with discipline and sincerity:
1) Early Morning Ritual:

Wake up in Brahma Mahurata(from 4:00 to 6:00 AM). In Vedic Scriptures, waking up in these hours is considered important. It's important because during these hours, the sattvic guna is dominant. This guna promotes clarity, mindfulness, spiritual intellect and peace in the mind.

Hence, this is the ideal time for any puja vidhi, starting the fasting or other devotional activities.

2) Sankalpa:

Take an early bath and show your obeisances before the deity of Lord Krishna and Shrimati RadhaRani. You can either perform this at home or can visit nearby Temples. This is the proper way to honor the Supreme Lord and His eternal energy.

Without a proper sankalp, it will be hard for you to complete the fasting within a preferred time. It includes spending a few minutes before the deities, chanting their holy names, and asking them to bless with strength throughout the day.

3) Fasting:

Fasting is ideally observed without food. In certain health conditions, a person can fast over fasting foods. Many senior devotees observe this fasting very strictly, they don't even accept a drop of water all day.

4) Chanting:

On the festival of Radha Ashtami, one must observe the fasting while chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. It is strictly recommended by the scriptures and many senior devotees. If you are new in spiritual lifestyle, chant at least three or four rounds(one round = 108 beads)on this auspicious day.

5) Reading Scriptures:

When you observe the fasting, make sure to spend the entire day reading about the devotion of Shrimat RadhaRani. You can either listen about this on online platforms, or visit the nearby Hare Krishna Temples and attend the divine lectures.

At least try to read 1-2 pages or listen to an hour-long lecture about RadhaRani's eternal love for Lord Krishna.

6) Devotional Activities:

Usually on such festivals, people decorate their home temples and prepare offerings for the deities of Lord Krishna and RadhaRani. They also bring new jewelleries and clothes for the deities. But, this isn't enough, you must bring real happiness into your home.

To do so, you should organize a group kirtan at home. You can invite some devotees to perform divine lectures at home, or you can listen to the recorded/ live lectures with your family.

7) Temple visit & Donation:

It is necessary to visit nearby Hare Krishna Temples on such occasions. Go and receive the darshan of Lord Krishna and RadhaRani.

Also, donate some money for the injured/abandoned cows and little calves, the underprivileged children and the people. You can also donate for the temple construction process, temple decoration, Bhagavad Gita distribution, deities, sevas and many more.

8) Break the Fasting:

After performing the morning and evening puja, one can break the fast after 12:00 PM in the noon.

Types of Radha Ashtami Fast

Devotees may observe the fast in different ways according to their health and capacity.

Complete Fast Until Noon

A devotee abstains from food until noon and completes the fast with prasadam after the midday worship.

Water-Only Fast

A devotee drinks water during the fasting period and avoids solid food until noon.

Fruit or Milk Fast

Those who cannot remain without food may take fruit, milk or other simple non-grain fasting preparations until noon.

The sincerity of the observance is more important than attempting a level of austerity that may harm one’s health.

What Can Be Consumed During the Fast?

A devotee observing a complete fast does not eat before noon. Those following a modified fast may take simple items such as:

  • Water
  • Fresh fruits
  • Milk
  • Buttermilk
  • Coconut water
  • Simple non-grain fasting preparations

The exact form of the fast may vary according to health, family practice and temple guidance. Food taken during a modified fast should remain simple and should not turn the observance into ordinary feasting.

What Should Be Avoided During the Fast?

During the fasting period, devotees should avoid:

  • Grains and grain-based preparations
  • Pulses and legumes
  • Onion and garlic
  • Intoxicants
  • Meat, fish and eggs
  • Packaged or heavily processed food
  • Overeating, even when consuming fasting food
  • Anger, arguments and harsh speech
  • Unnecessary entertainment and material distractions

After noon, devotees may honour regular sattvic prasadam offered to Sri Sri Radha-Krishna. Radha Ashtami is not an Ekadashi fast, so the Ekadashi restriction on grains does not automatically continue for the entire day.

How to Complete the Radha Ashtami Fast

The fast should ordinarily be completed after twelve noon and after the relevant worship or food offering.

A simple method is:

Complete the midday prayer or worship.
Offer the prepared food to Sri Sri Radha-Krishna.
Offer gratitude to Srimati Radharani.
Honour a moderate portion of prasadam.
Continue chanting, hearing and devotional activities during the rest of the day.

Devotees attending a temple celebration may complete the fast according to the temple’s programme and guidance.

Why Do Devotees Fast on Radha Ashtami?

Devotees fast on Radha Ashtami to dedicate their time and consciousness to remembering Srimati Radharani. Fasting simplifies bodily activities and allows greater attention to chanting, hearing and service.

Srimati Radharani represents the highest expression of devotion to Lord Krishna. By observing Her appearance day sincerely, devotees pray for humility, devotion and the opportunity to serve Krishna under Her guidance.

The fast is therefore a means of deepening devotion rather than an isolated physical austerity.
