The story of Gajendra Moksha is described in Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 8, Chapters 2-4, narrated by Srila Sukadeva Goswami to King Parikshit. This story talks about the deliverance of the king of elephants, Gajendra, from the clutches of a huge crocodile. Let us understand how Gajendra received the Lord’s mercy and was delivered from the cycle of birth and death.
Gajendra As King Indradyumna in His Previous Life
King Indradyumna ruled the Pandya kingdom in South India. He was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and eventually retired from royal life for self-realization. He went to the Malaya Hills and started living in a small ashram, practising meditation.
One day, while observing a vow of silence, he became deeply absorbed in meditation on the Paramatma in his heart. Meanwhile, Agastya Muni arrived with his disciples, but the king remained silent.
Taking this as disrespect, Agastya Muni became angry and cursed him to become an elephant. Indradyumna accepted the curse without giving any argument, accepting it as the will of providence. As a result of the curse, he became Gajendra, the king of the elephants in his next life.
The Crocodile Attacks Gajendra
Gajendra lived with his wives and children in the forests of Trikuta Mountain, surrounded by the Ocean of Milk. One day, he led his herd towards a beautiful lake in Varuna’s garden to mitigate his tiredness and thirst. The lake was beautifully decorated with lotus flowers and surrounded by flowering trees. Gajendra entered the lake and quenched his thirst, and also sprayed water over his wives and children.
A powerful crocodile that lived in the lake caught Gajendra’s leg in a tight grip. Gajendra was unable to free himself from the crocodile’s grasp. The other elephants tried to pull him out from behind, but their efforts failed due to the crocodile’s great strength.
The Bhagavatam mentions that Gajendra fought with the crocodile for one thousand years. As being the animal of land, all his strength got faded and the crocodile grew stronger because water was favorable to him.
When Gajendra found himself completely helpless and saw that no one could help him, he realised that he had been attacked by the crocodile by the will of providence. He then sought shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who alone could save him.
Gajendra Remembers the Lord
By Krishna’s mercy, Gajendra remembered a prayer he had learned as King Indradyumna. Although he now had an elephant’s body, his earlier devotion had not been lost.
He fixed his mind upon the Lord and offered heartfelt prayers. He praised Him as the source of everything, the witness within every heart, and the supreme shelter of all living beings.
Gajendra’s prayer went beyond escaping the crocodile. He sought freedom from the ignorance that binds the soul to material life. He understood that the Lord alone could give lasting shelter.
His appeal was directed to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Hearing it, Lord Vishnu, also known as Narayana, appeared on Garuda.
Lord Vishnu Rescues His Devotee
Gajendra remembered the prayer he had learned in his previous life as King Indradyumna and offered it with complete surrender. He glorified Lord Vishnu as the source of everything and the eternal shelter of all living beings. He prayed for freedom from ignorance and material bondage.
When Gajendra saw Lord Vishnu approaching on Garuda, carrying His disc, he lifted a lotus flower in his trunk and offered it to the Lord. Despite his pain, he offered respectful obeisances to Lord Narayana, the master of the universe.
The Lord immediately lifted Gajendra out of the water, along with the crocodile holding his leg. He then cut the crocodile’s mouth with His Sudarshana Chakra and freed the elephant king.
Both Receive the Lord’s Mercy
The crocodile had once been Huhu, a Gandharva king. After he pulled Devala Muni’s leg while the sage was bathing, the sage cursed him to become a crocodile. Freed by Lord Vishnu, Huhu regained his original form, offered prayers, and returned to Gandharvaloka.
Gajendra received sarupya-mukti: a spiritual form with four arms resembling the Lord’s form. Vishnu took him to Vaikuntha as His associate.
Conclusion
Thus, the Gajendra Moksha story teaches us to take shelter of the Supreme Lord in every condition of life. Just as He accepted Gajendra’s complete surrender, the Lord welcomes every soul who sincerely turns to Him. He is the ultimate protector of His devotees and alone can free us from the cycle of birth and death.
