Every festival is unique and has its own spiritual significance. Among them, one is known for its depth and brightness, Bahulashtami. It is celebrated as the divine day of Sri Radha Kunda's appearance.
For Vaishnavas, it is an auspicious day to observe and please Srimati Radha Rani and Lord Krishna. It falls in the Kartik month, which is known for its auspiciousness for devotional activities like charity, chanting, and others.
Radha Kund is a sacred pond of water. Its divinity is no different from Shrimati Radha Rani herself. It is situated in Govardhan, near Vrindavan, where Lord Krishna has performed the most divine lila to protect the people of Vrindavan.
In the Vedic Scriptures, it is symbolised as the love of Srimati Radha Rani for Lord Krishna. Whoever bathes in this sacred pond attains the rare fortune of Lord Krishna's devotion.
The Legend of Bahula: Naming a Holy Day
Bahulashtami is also known for another incident, related to one of the cows in Vraj, named Bahula.
Bahula was a gentle cow with an unshakable faith and devotion to Lord Krishna.
She was once caught by a tiger and requested to get free for one night so that she could feed her newborn calf.
She returned to the tiger as she promised on the next day. But as soon as the tiger attacked her, Lord Krishna appeared there.
Touched by the truthfulness and devotion, He saved her and blessed her to be always remembered on the holy day of Radha Kund appearance.
This year, Bahulashtami will be observed on November 2, 2026.
Baluasthimi Contemporary Observance and Celebration
Today, Bahulashtami is still observed by the Gaudiya Vaishanavas across all the regions in India. It usually falls at the end of October or in early November.
The following rituals are performed by the devotees to observe this divine day:
i) Govardhan Parikrama:
Most devotees walk around the Govardhan Hill a few times while chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra. It is a way to honour the divine area of Govardhan Hill.
ii) Harinam Sankirtan:
Throughout the day, the devotees engage in Harinam Sankirtan. It lasts all night with the beautiful sound of devotional instruments.

The Divine Origin of Sri Radha Kunda
The complete origin story of Radha Kund is narrated in the Padma Purana. This story occurred in the place of Govardhan Hill, where Lord Krishna performed his divine pastimes.
One day, a demon in the form of a bull, named Aristasura, was sent by Kamsa to find & kill Lord Krishna.
The demon reached Vrindavan and started to terrorise the entire village. Upon hearing the call of the people of Vrindavan, Lord Krishna saved everyone and killed the demon.
Even though he was an asura, Srimati Radha Rani teased the Lord and advised Him to take a bath in all the holy rivers since a bull represents dharma.
To proceed with Radha Rani's advice, Lord Krishna made an area for a pond. After this, He started playing His divine flute to call upon all the sacred rivers and fill His pond.
As soon as he played the flute, all the sacred rivers filled the pond with their sacred water.
Seeing the beautiful pond of Lord Krishna, RadhaRani wished to create her own pond. Along with her companions, she started digging the ground and made a perfectly round depression.
After this, she prayed to all the holy rivers to fill her pond, and they appeared to do so.
The Supreme Sanctity of Radha Kunda
Sri Radha Kund is beautifully glorified in the Padma Purana. Lord Chaitanaya Mahaprabhu once visited this pond during his pilgrimage.
He revealed the forgotten divinity of Radha Kund to the world. Since then, the Gaudiya Vaishanavas reestablished the area and made it recognisable for visitors.
His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada honoured Sri Radha Kund and made it a central place for devotional practices.

Bahulashtami 2026 is a divine event to remember the appearance of the sacred Radha Kund. This reminds us of the beautiful pastime of Lord Krishna with Shrimati Radha Rani and other Gopis, Gopas.
