Sun Temple (Surya Mandir), Jaipur

Set high on the Aravalli hills near the Galta Gate, the Sun Temple rewards visitors with some of the most stunning sunrise views in all of Jaipur. The temple was deliberately positioned on the eastern ridge so that the first rays of the morning sun would fall directly on the shrine - a detail that speaks to the deep reverence the Jaipur royals held for Surya Dev. The Suryavanshi rulers considered themselves direct descendants of the Sun God, making this temple deeply personal to the royal lineage.
 

The temple was built in 1734 AD by Diwan Rao Kripa Ram, a minister in the court of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. The Jaipur royals belonged to the Suryavanshi lineage - descendants of Lord Ram and the Sun God - which made a dedicated Sun temple a matter of dynastic pride. Its placement on the eastern hills was intentional, aligned with ancient Sthapatya Veda principles to catch the first light of dawn. The nearby Suraj Pol (Sun Gate) of the walled city further reflects this solar connection.
