History & About

Maharshi Sandipani Ashram is in the Ankpat area on Mangalnath Road, Ujjain, close to the Mangalnath Temple. According to religious tradition, this was the hermitage of Sage Sandipani, the guru of Lord Krishna, Balarama and Sudama.

The ashram includes the Gomti Kund, a tank mentioned in the Puranas that served as the ashram's water source, and beside it a Nandi image that the Ujjain district administration dates to the Shunga period. A stone engraved with the numerals 1 to 100 is shown as the work of the sage. The nearby area called Ankpat is traditionally where Lord Krishna washed his writing slate. Janmashtami is celebrated here with great devotion.

Government tourism sources describe the antiquity of the ashram through religious tradition, presenting Ujjain as a great centre of learning at the beginning of the Mahabharata period. The Ujjain district administration attributes the Nandi image beside the Gomti Kund to the Shunga period (about the 2nd–1st century BCE). Followers of the Vallabh sampradaya regard the site as the 73rd baithak (seat of discourse) of Shri Vallabhacharya.

According to the Bhagavata Purana, Lord Krishna and Balarama completed their studies here and, as guru-dakshina, brought back Sage Sandipani's lost son.

Significance

Revered by tradition as the hermitage of Sage Sandipani, where Lord Krishna, Balarama and Sudama received their education. Followers of the Vallabh sampradaya count it as the 73rd of Shri Vallabhacharya's 84 baithaks.

There is some sense of greatness and positive environment when you step inside the ashram. May be because of Lord and his Guru had a beautiful moments here, a Maharishi teaching to the Universal Teacher who has later preached entire mankind with his divine slokas at Kurukshetra. A must visit when in Ujjain.

🙏✨ Maharishi Sandipani Ashram, Ujjain – A Journey into Ancient Gurukul Tradition Visited Maharishi Sandipani Ashram during my Ujjain trip, and it was one of the most peaceful and memorable experiences of the journey. 🙏 This sacred place is traditionally associated with Lord Shri Krishna, Balram, and Sudama, who are believed to have received their education under Guru Sandipani. Walking through the ashram and reflecting on this ancient Gurukul tradition gives a truly surreal feeling of connecting with our rich spiritual and cultural heritage. The surroundings are calm, clean, and beautifully maintained, making it a wonderful place for quiet reflection and prayer. Gomti Kund, the ancient stone engraved with numbers from 1 to 100, and the beautiful paintings depicting the 64 arts mastered by Lord Krishna are some of the highlights of the visit. What touched me most was the sense of simplicity, discipline, knowledge, and values associated with the traditional Gurukul system. In today’s fast-paced world, places like this remind us of our roots and the timeless wisdom of our culture. I genuinely miss the peaceful atmosphere of this place even after returning. ❤️ A must-visit in Ujjain for anyone interested in spirituality, history, Krishna’s life, and the ancient Indian Gurukul tradition. 🌿🕉️✨

Maharishi Sandipani Ashram – Where Krishna Became a Student Located near the Kshipra River in Ujjain, this ashram is believed to be the ancient gurukul where Lord Krishna, along with his brother Balram and friend Sudama, received education from Guru Sandipani . It is said that Krishna mastered 14 Vidyas and 64 arts (Kalas) here, including warfare, music, and statecraft . The Vibe – Serene, historic, and spiritually enriching. The ashram is well-maintained and much less crowded compared to Ujjain's major temples, making for a peaceful visit . The roof features beautiful paintings depicting scenes from Krishna's learning days. What to See – The Gomati Kund (also called Nandi Kund), a sacred water tank believed to hold water from holy rivers, is a key highlight . There are also stone inscriptions and the symbolic 84 Baithak, representing various learning sessions conducted here . Tip – Plan about 1–1.5 hours for the visit. Combine it with your Mahakaleshwar temple trip as it's very close by . Verdict – A must-visit for devotees, history lovers, and anyone curious about India's ancient Gurukul education system. Peaceful, insightful, and deeply inspiring. 🕉️📚 Pro Tip – Best Way to Explore Ujjain For a hassle-free sightseeing experience, I highly recommend hiring a local e-rickshaw. The drivers know the city inside out and will comfortably take you to all the major spiritual and historic landmarks, including: Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple – One of the 12 Jyotirlingas Mahakal Lok Corridor – A stunning new riverside promenade Ram Ghat – Sacred steps on the Kshipra River Kal Bhairav Temple – Unique shrine with a fascinating liquor offering ritual Harsiddhi Temple – One of the 51 Shakti Peethas Sandipani Ashram – Where Lord Krishna studied Gadh Kalika Mata Shakti Peeth – A powerful hilltop shrine Mangalnath Temple – Believed to be the birthplace of Mars Why it works – E-rickshaws are affordable, navigate narrow lanes easily, and save you the headache of parking and traffic. Just negotiate the fare upfront (typically ₹500–₹800 for a half-day circuit) and you're all set for a smooth, stress-free darshan tour.

Sandipani Ashram in Ujjain is a very peaceful and spiritually important place. It is believed to be the ancient gurukul where Lord Krishna, Balram, and Sudama received their education from Guru Sandipani. I visited the ashram on Monday, and the place was very beautiful and calm. The surroundings are clean and the environment feels very serene. Inside the ashram, you can see idols of Krishna, Balram, Sudama, and Guru Sandipani, which makes the place even more special. There is also Gomti Kund inside the ashram premises, which is considered very sacred. It is believed that Lord Krishna brought water from different holy rivers here for his Guru. The kund adds to the spiritual and historic charm of the place. Overall, it is a wonderful place to visit in Ujjain if you want to experience spirituality, history, and peace.
