Had a wonderful visit to Gopal Mandir in Ujjain. During my visit on 7th June 2026, the temple featured a beautiful and unique decoration where Lord Ganesha was artistically adorned using fresh mangoes and green leaves, creating a truly mesmerizing sight. The creativity and devotion behind the decoration made the darshan even more special. The temple's peaceful atmosphere, vibrant architecture, and spiritual ambiance make it a must-visit for anyone coming to Ujjain. A memorable experience filled with faith and beauty. 🙏

Shri Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir, Ujjain
Major Deities: Lord Krishna as Dwarkadhish (Gopal); Shiva • Parvati and Garuda
Shri Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir is a 19th-century Krishna temple in the heart of Ujjain's old market, famous for its silver-plated doors and grand Janmashtami celebrations.
History & About
Shri Dwarkadhish Gopal Mandir stands in the middle of the large market square of old Ujjain, in the Bada Bazaar and Patni Bazaar area. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna as Dwarkadhish, and the sanctum also holds images of Shiva, Parvati and Garuda. The Ujjain district administration describes it as a fine example of Maratha architecture, and its silver-plated sanctum doors are a famous feature.
Janmashtami is the temple's main festival. On Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, the Harihar Milan is celebrated here, when Lord Mahakal's procession is brought to Gopal Mandir to meet Lord Krishna. The Scindia family's link with the temple continues in the Mahakal processions of Shravan and Bhadon, during which the palanquin deity is worshipped at Gopal Mandir.
According to the Ujjain district administration, Gopal Mandir was built in the 19th century by Bayajabai Shinde, queen of Maharaja Daulat Rao Shinde of Gwalior, in the Maratha style. Some sources give the year of construction as 1833 or 1844, but neither date is confirmed by an official source.
A popular story holds that the silver doors of the sanctum originally belonged to the Somnath temple, were carried away by invaders and later recovered by Mahadaji Shinde. Versions of this account differ, and it is not historically documented.
Significance
A 19th-century Scindia-era Krishna temple in the main market of old Ujjain, described by the Mahakaleshwar temple committee as the city's second-largest temple. It is known for its silver-plated sanctum doors, Janmashtami, and the Harihar Milan, when Lord Mahakal's procession comes to meet Lord Krishna.
