History & About

Ram Janardan Temple is a walled complex of two temples on the Ankpat side of Ujjain, beside the Vishnu Sagar tank. One temple enshrines Lord Rama with Sita and Lakshmana, and the other enshrines Janardana (Lord Vishnu).

The Ujjain district administration highlights the Maratha-period paintings on the walls of both temples, as well as older sculptures inside the complex and near the tank, which are important for the study of Indian sculpture. Painted scenes of Lord Rama's birth and marriage decorate the sanctum. The complex is quieter than Ujjain's major shrines and is served by hereditary priestly families.

According to the Ujjain district administration, the two temples were built in the 17th century by Raja Jaisingh, and the images of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita and of Janardana-Vishnu also date to that century. The boundary wall and the tank were added in the 18th-century Maratha period, along with the wall paintings.

The complex also preserves older sculptures: Vishnu images of the 10th century, a Govardhanadhari Krishna of the 11th century near the tank, and a Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesha group of the 12th century. The temple is protected as a Madhya Pradesh state monument (S-MP-310).

Beautiful ancient temple nestled amidst nature and not crowded at all, though just a stone’s throw from the Gadh Kalika Mandir. Two temples that house (a) a magnificent Rama Lashmana and Sita Devi and (b) Dwarkadhish. Legend says Sita Ma was tired when walking in the jungle and pleads (with folded hands) Ram to stop. If you see the feet of the Lord and Lakshmanji, they are in moving posture. And Sita Devi does look tired. Krishnaji murthy also is amazing with brilliant carving of Shankh, chakra and a hand holding the gadha (maze). At a lower level is a 1000 year old Vishnu idol that’s equally fascination. Adjacent is Lord Siva as a child Kusumeshwara, a boon Lord Siva gave to Parvathy. So a temple with great legend and history and a must visit. The lady there was eager and happy to narrate the details.

You must visit here not for spiritual or worshiping only...but also if you are archeology and history lover. These temples were build in 17th century and the sculpture of lord ram is with beard and it represents the vanwas look of lord ram. Temples are in good condition and part of historical places declared by government. Sight is not that good as you will gonna find a lot of dust and garbage arround here. Vishnu Sagar Pond is another center of attraction pn it's sight. Temples architecture is of next level.
