Pataleshwar Mahadev Temple, Jaipur

What makes this temple truly remarkable is that you have to descend 36 steps below the ground to reach the sanctum. The name Pataleshwar itself means "Lord of the Netherworld," and the underground setting creates a cool, cave-like atmosphere that feels worlds apart from the bustling streets above. At the heart of the shrine sits a natural Shivling, believed to be swayambhu - self-manifested from the earth. Locals hold deep faith in its spiritual power, especially during Maha Shivratri.

The temple is estimated to be around 400 years old, though its exact origin and founder remain a mystery. It was rediscovered in the late 1970s when the site was excavated, revealing the sanctum buried approximately 20 feet underground. Local legends sometimes connect the site to the Pandavas of the Mahabharata, adding to its ancient and mystical appeal. The underground Shivling and the stone carvings found during the excavation suggest it was once a thriving place of worship long before modern Jaipur was founded.
