Dussehra (Vijayadashami) 2026

Oct 21, 2026

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, will be celebrated on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. This auspicious festival marks the victory of good over evil, symbolising Lord Rama’s triumph over the demon king Ravana and Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura.

Falling on the 10th day of the Ashwin month in the Hindu calendar, Dussehra comes right after the nine days of Navratri.

It is observed across India with grand Ramlila performances, Ravana Dahan, and festive rituals that remind us of the eternal power of truth and righteousness.

Dussehra 2025

During Dussehra, devotees participate in various devotional activities such as Harinam Sankirtan, Ram Katha, chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, and different temple sevas.

At Gupt Vrindavan Dham, Dussehra is celebrated with great enthusiasm of devotion for Lord Rama.

Dussehra is more than a festival; it is an opportunity for every soul. It is the day to understand the values of dharma and learn to believe in the Lord in every situation.

Why is Dussehra celebrated?

The celebration is mainly based on two related tales—one of Goddess Durga slaying the demon Mahishasura, and the other of Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana. Both tales highlight the triumph of good over evil.

Durga Puja is arranged to worship the Goddess, glorifying Her killing of the Mahisasura demon with a trident to protect and please the demigods.

The character of Lord Rama is glorified and depicted by the performance of the Ramayana pastime, and the effigies are burned to commemorate the killing of demon Ravana by Lord Sri Ramachandra to eliminate the sinful ruling over the world.

How Is It Celebrated In Gupt Vrindavan Dham

At Gupt Vrindavan Dham, Ramachandra Vijayotsava is celebrated in a very cultural and devotional way. The sacred environment of the temple nurtures the soul and guides it toward spiritual enlightenment.

1) Mangala Aarti:

The day begins with early morning aarti with the bhog offerings and flowers. As the conch shells blow, the chantings of Hare Krishna Mahamantra start to get louder. The entire Dham echoes with the holy names of the Lord. All the devotees gather together and receive the darshan of Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram.

2) Abhishek:

A grand ritual of panchamrita abhishek is performed on the deity of Lord Rama and Lord Lakshman. The panchamrita is the mixture of milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and tulsi water. Devotees gather together and witness this beautiful mahaabhishek, an experience of divine mercy.

3) Ram Katha and Harinam Sankirtan:

There is a session of Ram Katha, a storytelling of how Lord Rama stood with dharma till the end. It is intended to deliver the following messages to the listeners:

i) Victory of dharma over evil:

After defeating Ravana, the mighty demon King, He also defeated the lust, anger, pride, and envy inside him.  This is why it is celebrated by burning down the statue of this king and celebrating the victory of the never-ending power of dharma.

ii) Devotion and Surrender:

In the story of Dussehra, there’s another thing that is highlighted, which is the devotion and complete surrender attitude of Hanuman. This marks the real image of a pure devotee of the Lord.  A devotee is always eager to serve the sevas of his/her Lord.

iii) Lust leads to Death:

The mighty King Ravana was a powerful demon and the ruler of Lanka.  He was a devotee of Lord Shiva and a great scholar of Vedic Knowledge. However, he was full of envy, false pride, anger, and lust. These tamasic qualities took him to his own deathbed.

4) Prasadam Distribution:

Dussehra 2026 celebration always ends with a large-scale distribution of prasadam to the visitors. Thousands of people are served charnamrita and the sanctified food offered to Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram.

There is a donation opportunity to support Anna-Daan Seva. The food that is offered to the Lord is a divine blessing for everyone.

At Gupt Vrindavan Dham, this sacred festival has been celebrated for many years. The devotional environment of this temple is ideal for the visitors.

vitarasi dikshu rane dik-pati-kamaniyam
dasa-mukha-mauli-balim ramaniyam
kesava dhrita-rama-sarira jaya jagadisa hare

Translation: "0 Kesava! O Lord of the universe! O Lord Hari, who has assumed the form of Ramacandra! All glories to You! In the battle of Lanka, you destroy the ten-headed demon Ravana and distribute his heads as a delightful offering to the presiding deities of the ten directions, headed by Indra. This action was long desired by all of them, who were much harassed by this monster."
