Once, Maharaja Yudhishthira inquired, “O Supreme Personality of Godhead, I have heard from You about the glories of Devashayani Ekadashi. Kindly explain the significance of the Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of the sacred month of Shravana.”

The Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna, replied, “O King, kindly hear attentively. Long ago, the great devotee Narada asked Lord Brahma this very question. He also inquired about the proper process of observing this Ekadashi and the method of worship to be performed on this auspicious day.”

Lord Brahma then said, “This Ekadashi is known as Kamika Ekadashi. Simply hearing its glories grants the same spiritual merit as performing the Vajapeya sacrifice. On this sacred day, one should worship Lord Vishnu, who holds the conch, disc, club, and lotus in His four hands.”

Worshipping the Supreme Lord on Kamika Ekadashi grants the same spiritual benefit as bathing at sacred holy places such as the Ganga, Kashi, Naimisharanya, and Pushkara. Indeed, the merit obtained by worshipping Lord Vishnu on this Ekadashi is said to be thousands of times greater than that obtained by bathing at Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse.

Just as water cannot remain on a lotus leaf, sinful reactions cannot touch one who faithfully observes Kamika Ekadashi. A devotee who worships Lord Hari with Tulasi leaves becomes freed from sinful reactions. Simply seeing the Tulasi plant destroys sins. By touching her, one becomes purified; by offering prayers to her, one becomes free from disease; and by serving and worshipping her, one becomes fearless of Yamaraja, the lord of death.

One who plants Tulasi receives the great fortune of residing in the association of Lord Sri Krishna. Offering Tulasi leaves at the lotus feet of the Lord awakens pure devotional service (śuddha-bhakti).

On Ekadashi, one who offers a ghee lamp and respectful obeisances to Tulasi Maharani obtains such immeasurable spiritual merit that even Chitragupta, the celestial recorder of the deeds of all living beings, cannot calculate it.

By faithfully observing the vow of Kamika Ekadashi, one becomes freed even from the gravest sins, including brahma-hatyā and bhrūṇa-hatyā. One who faithfully hears or recites the glories of Sri Kamika Ekadashi ultimately attains Vaikuntha, the eternal spiritual abode of the Supreme Lord.

Kamika Ekadashi Significance

Kamika Ekadashi is especially sacred because its glories were personally spoken by Lord Krishna. Those who faithfully observe this Ekadashi receive immense spiritual merit and the mercy of the Supreme Lord.

Anyone who offers Tulasi leaves to Lord Vishnu on this auspicious day becomes freed from sinful reactions. The scriptures further state that one is relieved even from the grievous sin of killing a Brahmana.

However, one should never intentionally commit sinful activities with the expectation of becoming purified by observing Kamika Ekadashi. Deliberately sinning on the strength of the Lord's mercy or the purifying power of Ekadashi is considered a grave offense.

The Parana (fast-breaking) time for Kamika Ekadashi 2026 should be observed between 5:56 AM and 8:03 AM on Monday, August 10.

Kamika Ekadashi should be observed with sincerity and devotion to receive the mercy of Lord Vishnu. When the Lord is pleased with our heartfelt service and devotion, there is no need to hanker after temporary material pleasures, for His mercy alone fulfils all our true needs.
