In Bhagavad Gita 7.16, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Him. They are called su-kritinah, who obey the rules of the scriptures and moral and social laws, and are more or less devoted to the Lord. Let us understand who these four types of people are and what brings them to Krishna.
1. The Distressed (Arta)
Those who approach the Lord when they experience suffering or material distress. In such difficult circumstances, they turn to Him and begin devotional service.
2. The Desirer of Wealth (Artharthi)
Those who approach the Lord because they need money or desire material gain. They begin devotional service with the hope of fulfilling their material needs and desires.
3. The Inquisitive (Jijnasu)
Those who approach the Lord out of curiosity about God. Their desire to know more leads them to seek the association of pure devotees and begin devotional service.
4. The Seeker of Knowledge (Jnani)
Those who approach the Lord seeking knowledge of the Absolute Truth. Through devotional service and the grace of the Lord or His pure devotee, they come to understand His personal nature.
