Why Parama Ekadashi Comes Only Once in 3 Years

Parama Ekadashi occurs once every three years because it falls specifically within the period of Adhik Maas, the extra lunar leap month added to the Hindu Calendar, which aligns with the year of the Sun.

This happens because twelve lunar months fall short of one solar year by eleven days. This gap slowly pulls our festival out of its season, like Diwali from the monsoon and Holi from winter.

To overcome this problem, the calendar behaves quite correctly: roughly once every 3 years, an extra lunar month is added. This additional month is called Adhik Maas, which keeps the lunar and solar calendars in alignment.

Moreover, Parama Ekadashi in 2026, falling in this Adhik Maas, is observed as Adhik Jyeshth, making the period spiritually charged, as it is one of the rarest moments in a devotee's lifetime.

This month brings two additional Ekadashis, namely Padmini Ekadashi in Shukla Paksha and Parama Ekadashi in Krishna Paksha. Also referred to as Purushottam Maas, this month is considered auspicious; any spiritual act performed during it, especially keeping Vrat on Parama Ekadashi, is said to yield merits thousands of times greater than usual.

Parama Ekadashi Vrat Katha - The Story of Sumedha and Pavitra

Once, Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna, "O Lord Krishna, please tell me about the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Adhik Maas. Lord Krishna narrated a story:

A very religious Brahmin named Sumedha lived in the town of Kampilya. His wife was also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. However, the couple was very poor because of some of their past sins. The wife used to serve the Brahmin and other guests who came to their house every day, and she slept hungry.

One day, Sumedha asked Pavitra, "The household doesn't work without money, so I have to go out somewhere to earn money for our livelihood."

His wife replied. "O, my dear husband! Whatever we are facing, the fruits of our past karma, and even the Lord doesn't question what is written in Bhagya. O Prannath! You did not need to do anything new. We'll receive everything here only if it's meant to be in our destiny.

After listening to his wife, the Brahmin abandoned his plan to go out and earn a living. After some time, Kaundinya Muni came to their hut. Seeing him, Sumedha and his wife bowed to Muni and said, " Hey Prabhu, we are blessed, you came to our house, the couple offered the sage asanas and food as an offering.

After having the meal, Sumedha's wife said, "O Sage! I have a feeling that you are here to eradicate my life problems. Please show us a way to end our sins and get a better life.

Hearing this, the sage replied, "All of your sins and sorrows will be destroyed by observing the Parama Ekadashi Vrat falling in Adhik Maas Krishna Paksha. The person who observes fast on this day becomes wealthy. Even Lord Kubera and King Harishchandra got their wishes fulfilled through this sacred fast.

With the guidance of Kaundinya Muni, the couple fasted for five days, and as soon as they ended their fast, the wife saw a prince coming to their doorstep. Under Brahma Ji's direction, the prince gave the Brahmin a livelihood, a good house, and plenty of wealth. By observing the fast on Parama Ekadashi, both partners experienced great happiness and ultimately attained heaven.

Shri Krishna said: "O Partha! A person who observes Vrat on Parama Ekadashi attains the merits of all Tirthas and Yajnas".
