In the journey of life, we all carry burdens of past actions, whether committed knowingly or unknowingly. What if there was a day divinely appointed for release and renewal?

Papamochani Ekadashi Vrat Katha (The Sacred Story)

The sacred story, or Vrat Katha, of Papamochani Ekadashi comes from the Bhavishya-uttara Purana. This timeless narrative powerfully illustrates how observing this fast can liberate one from the consequences of even the gravest sins.
Key Characters in the Story
• Medhavi Rishi: A young, powerful sage, highly intelligent and learned, wearing a clean white brahmana's thread and sitting handsomely in the asrama of his father while engaged in deep devotion.
• Manjughosha: A beautiful celestial dancing girl, or Apsara, sent from the heavenly realms.
• Chyavana Muni: The wise and respected father of Medhavi Rishi.
• Kamadeva: The celestial god of love and desire.
The Story of Seduction
In a beautiful forest, the young sage Medhavi was engaged in intense tapasya (spiritual austerities). Fearing the great power he was accumulating, the celestial beings sent the Apsara Manjughosha to disrupt his practice.
Kamadeva, the god of desire, decided to assist her. Using the eyebrows of Manjughosha as a bow, her glances as a bowstring, her eyes as arrows, and her breasts as a target, Cupid approached Medhavi to break his vows.
Captivated by the sage's handsome form, Manjughosha began to sing seductively. Medhavi was enchanted, and his concentration was broken.
The Curse and Consequences
Completely captivated, Medhavi abandoned his spiritual duties and lived with Manjughosha. For what felt to him like only a moment, he forgot his vows and his meditation. But in truth, he spent precisely fifty-seven years, nine months, and three days with her.
When Manjughosha finally asked to return to her celestial home, the sage suddenly realized the immense span of time he had lost. His eyes turned red and began to emanate sparks.
He now regarded Manjughosha as death personified and the destroyer of his spiritual life. Trembling with rage, he cursed her: "Oh sinful one! You have turned all the hard-earned results of my austerities to ashes! I curse you to become an evil hobgoblin (pishacha)!"
Atonement through the Papamochani Vrat
Cursed and distraught, Manjughosha humbly begged the sage for a way to be freed. Medhavi, now filled with deep remorse for his own fall and his angry curse, advised her to observe the sacred fast of Papamochani Ekadashi.
He then returned to his father’s hermitage, ashamed. His father, the great Chyavana Muni, saw his son's plight and also advised him to observe the very same Papamochani Ekadashi fast to atone for his own sin of squandering his spiritual wealth.
Restoration and Redemption
Both Medhavi and Manjughosha observed the sacred fast with complete faith and devotion. As a result of the fast's immense power, Medhavi's sins were completely destroyed, and he was restored to his former state of merit.
At the same time, Manjughosha was freed from the terrible curse. She returned to her beautiful celestial form and ascended back to the heavenly realms.
Benefits of Observing Papamochani Ekadashi
Just as Medhavi Rishi and Manjughosha were freed from their sins and curses, observing this Ekadashi with sincere faith and devotion is said to bestow numerous spiritual benefits:
• It is said to nullify the reactions from even the most grievous sins, such as killing a brahmana, killing an embryo, drinking liquor, or having sex with one's guru's wife.
