This sacred day is a transcendental occasion of receiving Causeless Mercy, when Srila Raghunath Das Goswami , A great Acharya of Gaudiya Vaishnav Sampradaya , under the loving guidance and mercy full glances of Sri Nityanand Prabhu ( Lord Balram himself) organised  a grand Feast of Chida ( chipped Rice ) & Dahi ( yogurt ) for all the devotees and Ultimately , He attained the shelter of the Lotus feet of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu ( Krishna himself ).

Traditionally , It falls on the thirteenth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Trayodashi) of the Jyeshtha month ( May - June ). In 2025 , this divine festival will be observed on Monday ,June 9th.

🔸Historical Background :

  The Sacred village of Panihati which is situated on the banks of River Ganges is a holy pilgrimage site for Gaudiya  Vaishnavas and It is glorified in  the 16th century Vaishnava literature such as 'Chaitanya Bhagavata' and 'Chaitanya Charitamrita'. The place is divinely blessed by the beautiful pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu ( Nimai ) , Sri Nityananda Prabhu ( Nitai ) and their personal associates.  

🔸Panihati Significance :- The origin of the name Panihati has different historical interpretations:

* From Pannyahati to Panihati :- Some local people say that the original name of Panihati came from Pannyhati which means market of goods and this was due to the region being a commercial hub and many trade activities taking place here through the river route.

* Connected with Paneti Rice :- Many believe that the name Panihati originated from a special variety of rice called Paneti which was imported from Jessore ( In present-day  Bangladesh )

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's Advent :- It is stated in Śrī Chaitanya Charitāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 1.17: 
sei kṛṣṇa avatari' kaila śikṣāṇa-bhakti-dāna 
"That same Lord Kṛṣṇa advent Himself as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and taught the path of devotional service."

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, appeared in the divine form of Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu in 1486 AD, at Śrīdhām Māyāpur in Navadvīpa, West Bengal. He descended along with His eternal and closest associates, including Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu (non-different from Lord Balarāma/Ananta Śeṣa), Śrīla Raghunātha Dāsa Goswāmī, and many others, to inaugurate the Saṅkīrtana Movement—the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord ( Hare Krishna Mahamantra).

🔸 The Divine Pastime of Srila Raghunath Das Goswami :

* Birth and Early life of Raghunath Das Goswami:- Raghunath Das Goswami was born in the village of Krishnapura, near Panihati. His father, Govardhan Majumdar, was a wealthy landlord. In his childhood, Raghunath Das Goswami regularly heard the beautiful glories of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Krishna's holy name from so many exalted devotees like Sri Haridas Thakur, a foremost associate of Mahaprabhu ,which instilled a deep and unwavering love for Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in his heart from a young age.
* Embracing Detachment :- Despite having so much splendor and wealth, he had no attraction towards all these. He wanted to leave his home and join Mahaprabhu's mission. But Lord Chaitanya did not advise him to do so, rather assured him that Krishna would soon free him from this illusion and give him his eternal shelter .He started living his life as per Mahaprabhu's instructions, but after one year, his heart could not live without meeting Mahaprabhu and he again tried to run away from home. His father caught him and brought him back. But It is said that  Devotees who had developed the deep love for Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in their hearts, nobody can really bind them. 

* Meeting with Sri Nityanand Prabhu :- One very auspicious day, Raghunatha Dasa Goswami received joyful news that Sri Nityananda Prabhu had arrived at panihati. At that time he was full of loving enthusiasm to meet him so he humbly sought permission from his father and went to meet Nityanand Prabhu who is Lord balram himself . He saw Nityananda Prabhu sitting on the rock under the banyan tree along with his servants and Kirtanayas  on the banks of the Ganges river. Lord Nityanand prabhu's beauty felt as if crores of suns had risen simultaneously. Raghunath Das Goswami was hesitating to meet such a great personality directly, so he paid obeisance from afar. But some devotees saw him doing this and informed Nityananda Prabhu. Then Nityananda Prabhu called him and very mercifully & lovingly said : You are a thief. Now you have come to see Me. Come here, come here. Today I shall punish you!” (CC Antya 6.47) And then Our very merciful Lord  placed his lotus feet on Sri Raghunath Das's head and gave him an order to organise a great feast for the devotee.

🔸 Festival of Punishment :-  Panihati Chida-Dahi Festival is also known as Dand-Mahotsav ( Festival of Punishment).

* The Divine Punishment :- Our gracious lord Nityanand said to Raghunath Das :-  “You are just like a thief, for instead of coming near, you stay away at a distant place. Now that I have captured you, I shall punish you”.( CC Antya 6.50)  And this is how he ordered him to Make a festival and feed all his associates yoghurt and chipped rice. ( Chida-Dahi ) .After  Hearing this, Raghunath Dasa was immensely pleased by heart.

* The Deeper meaning of Punishment :- In the Spiritual world ,  Punishment from the Supreme Lord and his devotees is not a source of  pain but a profound divine blessing .It is a sacred fire which burns away the false ego  and attachment and takes that soul closer to Lord Hari . At Panihati ,Srila Raghunath Das Goswami received a wonderful chance to serve the vaishnavas in the form of divine. punishment. This was nothing but  the causeless mercy and Love of Lord Nityanand Prabhu .Who blessed him with the chance to arrange a grand festival of Chida dahi

* The Feast :- Srila Raghunath Das Goswami sent his men to the market to procure all kinds of food items like yogurt, sweets, bananas, sugar, milk, camphor, rice, etc. As the festival gained popularity and so many people began to gather, additional food supplies and large cooking vessels ( 200-400 Clay pots ) were brought from neighboring villages.First, he soaked the rice in warm milk and divided it into two portions. One portion was mixed with thick milk, bananas, sugar, ghee, and camphor, while the other portion was mixed with yogurt, sugar, and bananas. In this way, the dahi-chida (Chipped rice with yogurt) was prepared, and various specialty fruits, dry fruits, sandalwood, rose petal jam, and many other delicious ingredients were added to it. This was then served to Srila Nityanand Prabhu and all the devotees .

* The Divine Pastime of Sri Chaitanya mahaprabhu & Sri Nityanand prabhu:- As soon as everyone was served the prasadam, Nityananda Prabhu meditated on Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and Mahaprabhu manifested there. However, not everyone could see Him. Nityananda Prabhu, in spiritual joy, fed Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Chida-dahi (chipped rice with yogurt), and Lord Chaitanya mahaprabhu and Nityanand prabhu who are none other than Sri Krishna and Sri Balram themselves - recalled about their most beautiful childhood pastimes with their cowherd friends in Vrindavan at the bank of River Yamuna  
* As they remembere their beautiful pastimes, they joyfully fed each other dahi-chida prasadam on the banks of the ganges. After that, Nityananda Prabhu gave a signal, and everyone started chanting "Hari Hari." All the devotees relished the dahi-chida prasadam, and a grand celebration took place .In this way, experiencing transcendental bliss, all the personal associates of Lord Krishna and Balarama were overjoyed to have Their direct association and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

🔸 Spiritual lessons from the Festival :-

 - Detachment :- Raghunath Das Goswami belonged to an extremely wealthy family, so much so that all the Brahmins in Nadia were dependent on their family's charity. Despite having such great prosperity, Raghunath Das Goswami was never attached to it. His attraction was never towards material comforts or a sense-gratifying household life. Instead, he always wanted to serve Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

"Service to Krishna is the highest pleasure. No other service can compare. Material service may give some flickering happiness, but devotional service to Krishna gives eternal, ever-increasing bliss."

  - Determination :- Raghunath Das Goswami Maharaj had a great determination to attain the lotus feet of Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. There were a lot of restrictions in his family and as much as he always wanted to stay under the shelter of Mahaprabhu, he had no interest in household life. This is one of the primary symptoms of a devotee , even when surrounded by so much opulence and material luxuries , he remains always untouched . His heart is firmly fixed on Krishna completely

  - Dependence on Spiritual master:- On the next day of the festival, Nityananda Prabhu blessed Srila Raghunath Das Goswami that he would soon receive the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo
yasyāprasādān na gatiḥ kuto ’pi
"By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the mercy of Kṛṣṇa. Without the mercy of the spiritual master, one cannot make any progress.

Sri Nityananda Prabhu blessed Raghunath Das Goswami by placing his lotus feet on his head and giving him Divine Punishment for organizing Chida Dahi Mahaboj for all Vaishnavas and thus Raghunath das Goswami attained Krishna's Special mercy by the grace of his Spiritual master ( Sri Nityanand Prabhu) and received Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's personal association and his divine bliss. Similarly, if we also want to receive Sri Chaitanya mahaprabhu and Sri Nityanand Prabhu's grace, We must serve them
