What is Padmini Ekadashi?

The word 'Padmini' means the divine lotus, a sign of spiritual awakening and purity. Padmini Ekadashi is the one observance that inspires the devotees to stay pure in life.

This Ekadashi falls during the Shukla Paksha, which is why it is also observed on the 11th day as Shukla Paksha Ekadashi.

Why is Padmini Ekadashi So Special?

Padmini Ekadashi, also known as Kamala Ekadashi, is unique because it falls in "Purushottam Maas." This is the extra month that Lord Vishnu has named after Himself. It is the month dearest to Him.

This day is named "Kamala" because it is dedicated to Lord Narayana, the beloved husband of the Goddess of Fortune, Lakshmi Devi. To worship Him on this day is to invite the highest blessings into your home.

The glories of this day are truly magnificent:

Fasting on this day provides merit equivalent to visiting every holy pilgrimage site in the world.

Staying awake during the first quarter of the night grants the merit of an ancient Agnistoma holy ceremony.

Staying awake through the second, third, and fourth quarters grants the merit of the Vajapeya, Ashvamedha, and Rajasurya ceremonies.

It is as powerful as Lord Krishna Himself in removing past sins.

Significance of Padmini Ekadashi

The spiritual significance of padmini ekadashi is exceptionally powerful. It can remove all of the mistakes and sins one has performed in their pastimes.

Devotees seek for this day to maintain their purity and gain positive growth in their spiritual life. For those living a material life, this Ekadashi is helpful in providing purification and prosperity to their lives.

The observance of padmini ekadashi is rare because it falls during Adhik month, which occurs once in every three years. This is why it is counted as the one bringing positive energy and inner strength.

Padmini Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Story)

The story behind this Ekadashi is explained as the spiritually powerful and merciful transformation of a life as an effect of devotion. Traditionally, this day is considered very auspicious for the spiritual seekers.

It is the story of a king named Kirtivirya from the kingdom of Mahishmati. His actions were rooted in dharma and living a life with honesty and kindness. He had ruled his kingdom with justice and empathy towards his people.

Despite living a peaceful and successful life, he used to suffer from the sorrow of having no child of his own. Even after performing many yagnas and rituals, he still remained childless.

Being worried about the situation, the king decided to take advice from a great sage named Angira Rishi. When he interacted with him, the sage suggested observing this Ekadashi.

The king followed the advice and observed the padmini ekadashi with complete rituals. He spent the day with complete vrat and chanting of Lord Vishnu's holy names.

Both the king and queen observed the fast and chanted the holy names all day, even staying awake all night. Satisfied by the steady devotion and intense faith, Lord Vishnu blessed them with a powerful and pure child.

Later, with the blessings of Lord Vishnu, the queen gave birth to a virtuous child, who became a successful and prosperous ruler in the future.
