The legendary background of the Mohini Avatar is a testament to the Lord’s role as the protector of the cosmic balance. The most famous occurrence of this form involves the demon Bhasmasura.
Bhasmasura was a powerful demon who sought immortality through the strength of his own ego. He performed grueling penance to please Lord Shiva.
When Shiva appeared, Bhasmasura asked for a terrifying boon: "Grant me the power that anyone whose head I touch with my hand shall immediately be turned to ashes." Lord Shiva, known as Ashutosh (he who is easily pleased), granted the wish.
However, Bhasmasura was consumed by arrogance. He immediately decided to test the boon on Lord Shiva himself. As the demon chased the Great Deva, Lord Vishnu intervened by manifesting as Mohini. She was a maiden of such celestial beauty that even the gods were mesmerized.
When Bhasmasura saw Mohini, his murderous intent was replaced by overwhelming lust. Mohini, with a playful smile, told him, "I will be yours, but only if you can match my skill in the art of dance."
Bhasmasura, blinded by Moha, agreed. They began a rhythmic dance of complex movements. Eventually, Mohini performed a move where she gracefully placed her hand on her own head.
Entranced and unthinking, Bhasmasura imitated her perfectly. The moment his hand touched his head, his own boon took effect, and he was instantly reduced to a pile of ashes.
Through this avatar, Lord Vishnu teaches us that while the material world is full of enchantment, it is the Lord’s wisdom that directs these forces for the ultimate good of the universe.
