Occurrence in Magha Shukla Paksha

Magha Shukla Paksha is the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Magha. This period is considered spiritually potent, as it is dear to Lord Vishnu in the scriptures.

Vaishnava devotees often focus on chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, fasting, kirtan, and temple sevas during this day. All these activities enhance their connection with the Supreme Lord, Lord Shri Krishna.

It is suggested to observe this day by practicing chanting and engaging in temple activities like kirtan and sevas. These practices help purify one’s negative thoughts, heart, and body.

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu

Bhaimi Ekadashi is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu. He is the divine form of the Supreme Lord, Lord Krishna, who protects and maintains the entire universe.

Vaishnava devotees honor Lord Krishna during Brahma Muhurat with mangala aarti, offerings of fresh Tulsi leaves, holy water, flowers, fruits, the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, and Harinam Sankirtan.

This Ekadashi also purifies one’s intellect, provides clarity between right and wrong, illusion and reality, and reduces one’s tendency to struggle with unnecessary emotions like greed, lust, anger, and other negative qualities.

Attainment of Vaikuntha

Vaikuntha is the spiritual abode of Lord Vishnu. The soul that becomes liberated after death attains direct entry to this divine place.

Liberation is the process of relieving the soul from the cycle of birth and death. Whoever worships this Ekadashi with devotion and sincerity is allowed to enter this place and serve the Lord eternally.

In ancient times, Agnishtoma Yajna was considered one of the most powerful soma sacrifices. It was a fire sacrifice that continued for several days and was believed to bring spiritual merits to the life of the one who performed it.

In this age of Kali Yuga, it is practically not easy for people to perform such rituals. Therefore, observing this Ekadashi is suggested, as it provides equal merits.

Legend of Malyavan and Pushpavati (Vrat Katha)

Life in Indra’s Celestial Kingdom

The main story behind Bhaimi Ekadashi was told by Lord Shri Krishna to King Yudhishthira.

In Vedic times, there were two Gandharvas named Malyavan and Pushpavati in the celestial palace of Indra, the king of the heavens.

Both of them were extremely beautiful and highly skilled in singing and dancing. They used to spend hours enjoying the luxury of King Indra's heavenly palace.

As a result of excessive sensory enjoyment, they forgot their spiritual discipline, respectful nature towards others, humility, and the attitude of worshipping the Lord.

Curse of Indra

One day, their fate brought them to a life-changing court assembly, which completely changed their upcoming years.

Malyavan and Pushpavati were acting as usual, ignorant, disrespectful, and inappropriate in front of everyone in the assembly. They disrespected the presence of King Indra and disturbed the purity of the gathering.

Seeing all this, Indra cursed them in front of everyone that they would be reborn as pisachas and leave his heavenly kingdom to suffer the loss of all comfort, wealth, and security.

Transformation into Pisachas

As soon as King Indra cursed Malyavan and Pushpavati, they started to lose their beauty. Their celestial beauty disappeared, and they turned into horrible-looking pisachas.

The heavenly pleasures and luxury were replaced by suffering, weakness, and intolerable distress.

Their sudden fall revealed one eternal truth: even heavenly beings can lose everything in one moment and be forced to live a life filled with suffering.

This happens when one forgets devotion to the Supreme Lord and remains busy enjoying sensory pleasures.

Suffering in the Himalayas

After the curse, Malyavan and Pushpavati wandered in the Himalayan region, completely isolated from heavenly comforts and society.

They suffered there through extreme cold weather, hunger, and complete isolation for many years.

All these sufferings reminded them of their constant ignorant behavior toward the Supreme Lord.

They deeply felt guilt and started longing for liberation from the curse and its unbearable effects.

Accidental Observance of Jaya Ekadashi

On the day of Jaya Ekadashi, they were hungry as usual and also remained awake all night, remembering the Supreme Lord. However, they were completely unaware that they were observing an Ekadashi.

They completed the fast throughout the day and night, without any food or even a single drop of water, which is considered the highest form of observance.

Restoration through Ekadashi’s Mercy

Lord Vishnu became pleased by the sincere observance of Malyavan and Pushpavati. He appeared before them, and all the effects of King Indra's curse vanished at that moment.

The power of Bhaimi Ekadashi removed all their negative karmic reactions from past lives.

By the mercy of Lord Vishnu, they received their celestial forms again and were released from ghostly suffering.

They offered humble gratitude to the Lord and acknowledged the merciful spiritual merits of this Ekadashi.
