Verse 1
Om. That Supreme Lord is whole, and this world that comes from Him is whole as well. The whole arises from the Whole, and even when the whole is drawn out of the Whole, the Whole remains entirely whole.
Verse 2
Whatever moves in this changing world is pervaded by the Lord and belongs to Him. Enjoy only what He has allotted to you, and do not covet anything else, for whose wealth is it, after all?
Verse 3
Doing one's work in this spirit, a person may wish to live here for a hundred years. For you, a human being, there is no other way than this; work done in this way does not cling to a person.
Verse 4
There are worlds called asurya, the worlds of those turned away from God, wrapped in blind darkness. All people who destroy their own soul go to those worlds after death.
Verse 5
The One Lord never stirs, yet He is swifter than the mind; the gods could not reach Him, for He had already gone ahead. Standing still, He outruns all who run. By His power Mātariśvā, the lord of the wind, upholds the waters and the workings of all beings.
Verse 6
He moves, and He does not move. He is distant, and He is also close at hand. He dwells inside all this, and He also lies beyond all this.
Verse 7
One who sees all living beings within the Supreme Self, and the Supreme Self within all beings, no longer feels aversion toward anyone.
Verse 8
For the wise person who sees all beings as one with the Self in spiritual nature, and who perceives that oneness everywhere, what bewilderment or grief can remain?
Verse 9
He, the Supreme Lord, pervades everything and shines with pure light. He has no material body, no wound and no sinews; He is pure and untouched by sin. The all-seeing sage and thinker, master of all and self-existent, He has from time without beginning rightly arranged for every being what it needs.
Verse 10
Those who worship ignorance enter blind darkness. Into still deeper darkness go those who delight only in what passes for knowledge.
Verse 11
One result, they say, comes from true knowledge, and another from ignorance. So we have heard from the steady sages who explained this to us.
Verse 12
Whoever understands knowledge and ignorance side by side crosses over death by rightly dealing with ignorance, and through knowledge tastes immortality.
Verse 13
Those who worship what is not the original cause, such as the demigods, enter blind darkness. Still deeper is the darkness of those devoted only to the impersonal Absolute.
Verse 14
One result, they say, comes from worshipping the Origin of all, and a different one from worshipping what is not the origin. So we have heard from the steady sages who explained it to us.
Verse 15
Whoever understands together both the eternal Origin and the perishable world passes beyond death by seeing the perishable for what it is, and through the eternal Lord attains immortality.
Verse 16
The face of the Truth is hidden behind a golden lid. O Pūṣan, nourisher of all, please draw it aside, so that I, who am devoted to the truth, may see You.
Verse 17
O Pūṣan, nourisher; O sole seer; O Yama, controller; O Sūrya; O Prājāpatya, master of all creatures: spread apart Your rays and draw in Your blazing light, so that I may see Your most auspicious form. That Person who dwells there, I too am of the same spiritual nature as He.
Verse 18
Let the breath of life return to the undying wind, and let this body end in ashes. Om. O Lord, enjoyer of sacrifice, remember what I have done; remember, O Lord, remember all that I have done.
Verse 19
O Agni, O Lord, You know all our deeds; lead us by the good path to true wealth. Keep far from us the crooked sin that leads us astray. Again and again we offer You our words of homage.
