Nityananda Trayodashi 2025
Srila Narottam Dasa Thakur describes about Nityananda Prabhus appearance (Nityananda Trayoadashi) in his beautiful song "Hari Hari Bifale":
Vrajendra-nandana jei, saci-suta hoilo sei,
balarama hoilo nitai
dina-hina jata chilo, hari-name uddharilo,
tara sakshi jagai madhai
Translation: Lord Krishna, who is the son of the King of Vraja, became the son of Saci (Lord Caitanya), and Balarama
became Nitai. The holy name delivered all those souls who were lowly and wretched. The two sinners Jagai
and Madhai are evidence of this.
When Sri Krishna appeared on this planet five thousand years ago, He was accompanied by His elder brother, Sri Balarama. However, in Kali Yuga, the same Supreme Lord appeared as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and Sri Balarama descended as Sri Nityananda Prabhu, the most merciful personality to ever walk this earth. Nityananda Prabhu distributed divine love to even the most fallen souls, asking for nothing in return. His mission was simple— spread the Sankirtana Movement, the congregational chanting of the Holy Names, initiated by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Nityananda Prabhu’s mercy is so great that even those unqualified for spiritual life can attain Krishna through Him. His love is unconditional, and all He asks is that we take shelter of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and chant the Holy Names.
Nityananda Prabhu: The Embodiment of Mercy

Lord Nityananda is known as Avadhuta—a transcendental personality beyond all material conventions. His mercy knows no bounds, and it is by His grace that one can enter into the service of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and attain the ultimate goal of life—Krishna Prema.
Appearance of Lord Nityananda
Sri Nityananda Prabhu appeared on Trayodashi Tithi (the 13th day) of the bright fortnight of Magha month, which falls on February 10, 2025 this year. He was born in the village of Ekachakra, in present-day West Bengal , to Hadai Pandit and Padmavati Devi . Even as a child, Nityananda displayed extraordinary devotion and often enacted the pastimes of Lord Krishna and His associates. His childhood was filled with divine plays, leaving everyone mesmerized.
However, at the age of 12, Nityananda left home to travel with various sadhus and later met Lord Chaitanya (his eternal brother) in Navadvipa, where He became the pillar of Mahaprabhu’s Sankirtana mission.
What is Nityananda Trayodashi & Why is it Celebrated?
Nityananda Trayodashi is the holy appearance day of Lord Nityananda , the eternal associate of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It is observed by devotees worldwide with great enthusiasm, as Lord Nityananda is the personification of mercy. Without His grace, one cannot approach Chaitanya Mahaprabhu or understand Krishna’s divine love.
The day is marked by kirtans, discourses, abhisheka (bathing ceremony of the deity), and special offerings in temples, especially in ISKCON and Gaudiya Vaishnava centers. Devotees pray to Lord Nityananda for spiritual strength, humility, and the ability to serve Chaitanya Mahaprabhu wholeheartedly.
Divine Pastimes of Nityananda Prabhu
1. Delivering Jagai and Madhai
One of the most famous pastimes of Lord Nityananda is His merciful deliverance of the two most sinful brothers—Jagai and Madhai. These two were notorious criminals, drunkards, and offenders. When Lord Nityananda approached them, they attacked Him, injuring His forehead. Yet, instead of retaliating, He forgave them and begged them to chant the Holy Names of Krishna.
Seeing this, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was ready to invoke His divine weapon, the Sudarshana Chakra, to punish them. But Lord Nityananda, the embodiment of compassion, pleaded for their forgiveness. Witnessing such mercy, the brothers surrendered and became great devotees. This pastime reflects the limitless kindness of Nityananda Prabhu—no matter how fallen a person may be, if they take shelter of His mercy, they can be purified.
2. Placing His Lotus Feet on Raghunath Das Goswami’s Head
Raghunath Das Goswami, one of the six Goswamis of Vrindavan, was desperate to leave his material life and serve Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. However, all his attempts failed—until he received the blessings of Lord Nityananda in Panihati. Lord Nityananda placed His lotus feet on Raghunath’s head, empowering him with spiritual strength. Soon after, Raghunath Das Goswami successfully escaped to Puri and dedicated his life to Mahaprabhu’s service.
These pastimes show how Nityananda Prabhu’s mercy is essential for one’s spiritual progress.
Nityananda Trayodashi Celebrations At ISKCON
At ISKCON temples and Hare Krishna Movement centers worldwide, Nityananda Trayodashi is celebrated with great devotion. The day begins with mangal arati, kirtan, and glorification of Lord Nityananda’s pastimes. Special abhisheka is performed for Nityananda Prabhu’s deity, followed by bhoga offerings.
Devotees engage in distributing prasadam, sharing the mercy of Lord Nityananda by distributing books and chanting the holy names on the streets. The festival serves as a reminder that Nityananda Prabhu’s mercy flows through the parampara and can be accessed through the instructions of Srila Prabhupada and dedicated Vaishnavas.
Srila Prabhupada's Teachings on Lord Nityananda
Srila Prabhupada repeatedly emphasized that without the mercy of Lord Nityananda, one cannot attain Krishna. He taught that Lord Nityananda’s mission is carried forward through book distribution , Harinam Sankirtan, and spreading Krishna consciousness.
Just as Nityananda Prabhu tirelessly preached in Bengal, Srila Prabhupada, as His empowered representative, spread the Holy Name across the world. His teachings on compassion, book distribution , prasadam seva, and sincere chanting are the direct manifestation of Lord Nityananda’s mercy in modern times. Nityananda Prabhu is the embodiment of causeless mercy (kripa-sindhu) and unlimited compassion, even more than Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in certain ways. While Mahaprabhu sometimes maintained strictness, Nityananda Prabhu never considered anyone’s faults and bestowed mercy without judgment, delivering even the most sinful and offensive people.
Srila Prabhupada, as a true representative of Nityananda Prabhu, exhibited the same boundless mercy in various ways:
- Preaching to the Most Fallen – Just as Nityananda Prabhu went to drunkards and criminals, Srila Prabhupada went to Western countries, where people were completely unaware of Krishna consciousness.
- Giving Krishna Consciousness Freely – Like Nityananda Prabhu, who did not demand qualification, Srila Prabhupada freely distributed the Hare Krishna mantra to anyone willing to chant.
- Establishing the Panihati Spirit – Nityananda Prabhu’s festival of chipped rice (chida-dahi) at Panihati became a symbol of loving service. Srila Prabhupada encouraged devotees to distribute prasadam globally.
- Overlooking Disqualifications – Many of Prabhupada’s disciples came from backgrounds of intoxication, illicit activities, and ignorance, but he transformed them into devotees, just as Nityananda Prabhu did with Jagai and Madhai.Dedication to Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati’s Order – Nityananda Prabhu served Chaitanya Mahaprabhu selflessly. Similarly, Srila Prabhupada, despite challenges, carried out the order of his guru without considering personal hardships.
- Preaching with Joy – Nityananda Prabhu was always joyful and ecstatic while spreading the holy name. Srila Prabhupada carried the same mood, engaging devotees in blissful kirtans and festivals worldwide.
Nityananda Prabhu Pranam Mantra & Importance of His Mercy
Devotees chant the Nityananda Pranam mantra to seek His blessings:
nityānandaṁ ahaṁ naumi sarvānanda-karaṁ param |
harināma-pradaṁ devaṁ avadhūta-śiromaṇim ||
This mantra glorifies Nityananda Prabhu as the topmost giver of Harinam, and the reservoir of all bliss. By praying to Lord Nityananda, one’s heart becomes purified, and devotional life becomes joyful. His mercy enables even the most fallen to experience divine love.
