A story of Mahabharat times when bhimasena, the son of Vayudeva, brought his concern about fasting on ekadashi to his grandfather, Srila Vyasadeva. As a gift from wind-god, bhimasena was the only one in the pandavas- including the wife and the mother, who couldn’t bear the hunger at all. Due to this, he wasn’t able to fast on ekadashis but had a strong desire to pleases his Lord Vasudev, other than charity and worshipping.
Understanding bhimasen’s condition, Vyasadeva suggested him to observe the one fasting, falls in the month of Jayestha (May-June), in a extreme hot month of summer, known as Nirjala Ekadashi’. Steps to Follow for Perfect Nirjala Ekadashi Fasting
Observing Nirjala Ekadashi is about spiritual purification of mind and body. To accomplish that, there is a need of proper routine to follow:
1. Pre-preparation of Ekadashi: A day before Ekadashi, on 10th day (dashami) there should be restriction towards tamsic food, including garlic, onion and spices. One should only have satvic food the entire day until sunset. After sunset, one should starts preparing mentally to fast the next day with no food at all.
2. The day of Ekadashi: One should wake up in Brahma Muhurta(between 4:00-6:00 AM) on the day of fasting (11th day) to take a bath, offer sincere prayers to Lord Vishnu and ask for his blessings. This prayer will help gaining inner strength to control desires and observe fasting by restrict eating food and water for the next 24 hours.
Also, spend the entire day chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra, listening to ekadashi vrat katha and reading holy scriptures to fuel your inner consciousness.
3. Breaking the fast: On the folowing day after sunrise, the day should begins with offering food, fruits and sincere obeisances to the Lord. Offer the food and fruits to the devotees or brahamanas in the temple. Atlast, break your fast with fruits, water, and then some prasadam that has been offered to the lord.
This day of Dwadashi is very auspicious for donating food, clothes, and other help to the people in need.
