How to Be Fearless and Mentally Strong: Lessons from Bhagavad Gita

Fear is one of the biggest obstacles in life, preventing us from making progress both materially and spiritually. However, the Bhagavad Gita provides timeless wisdom on how to overcome fear, develop confidence, and attain true mental strength. A person who understands their spiritual identity and takes shelter of Krishna becomes free from all fear and anxieties.

A Sober Person is Not Bewildered

Soberiety is the consequence of real education. When a person acquires knowledge and practice it in life, he develops the quality of soberness in his character. Srimad Bhagavad-gita declares that such a sober person is steady at his position irrespective of external situations, be they of favourable or unfavourable nature.

dehino 'smin yathā dehe
kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā
tathā dehāntara-prāptir
dhīras tatra na muhyati

"As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change." (BG 2.13)

sober person (dhīra) understands that the soul is eternal and simply changes bodies. Such a person remains fearless in all situations, knowing that nothing material can harm the soul.

Understanding the Nature of the Spirit

The Bhagavad Gita (2.22) explains the eternality of the soul through the analogy of changing garments:

vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya
navāni gṛhṇāti naro ’parāṇi
tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇāny
anyāni saṁyāti navāni dehī

"As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones." (BG 2.22)

This realization eliminates fear of death and strengthens the mind. A person fixed in this knowledge does not become disturbed by external changes.

The Steadiness of a Spiritually Strong Person

A truly sober person remains unaffected by external disturbances. Bhagavad Gita (6.19) compares such steadiness to a flame in a windless place:

yathā dīpo nivāta-stho
neṅgate sopamā smṛtā
yogino yata-cittasya
yuñjato yogam ātmanaḥ

"As a lamp in a windless place does not waver, so the transcendentalist, whose mind is controlled, remains always steady in his meditation on the transcendent Self." (BG 6.19)

Developing Mental Strength Through Spiritual Knowledge

Krishna further explains in Bhagavad Gita 2.22:

Understanding this eliminates fear of death and strengthens the mind. A person fixed in this knowledge does not become disturbed by external changes.

Effects of the steady character

Real knowledge develops the character of a person and when one becomes realised with the topmost knowledge of the self or becomes self-realised, his external behavioue exhibits the divine quality of steadiness.

sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ sva-sthaḥ

sama-loṣṭāśma-kāñcanaḥ

tulya-priyāpriyo dhīras

tulya-nindātma-saṁstutiḥ

"He regards alike happiness and distress; who looks upon a lump of earth, a stone and a piece of gold with an equal eye; who is equal toward the desirable and the undesirable; who is steady, situated equally well in praise and blame, honor and dishonour." (BG 14.24)

Along with such an external ehaviour one also becomes fearless in nature, undisturbed in the painful conditions of material existence viz. birth, disease, old age and death.

The Power of Surrendering to Krishna

Real confidence comes from taking shelter of Krishna. The Lord assures in Bhagavad Gita 18.66:

sarva-dharmān parityajya
mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo
mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

"Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear." (BG 18.66)

When one fully surrenders to Krishna, they are protected from all fear and distress. This surrender is not an external act but a deep internal realization of Krishna’s supreme shelter.

Practices to Become Fearless and Confident

  1. Chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Chanting purifies the heart and removes anxiety, making the mind peaceful and strong.

  2. Studying Srila Prabhupada’s Books
Reading Bhagavad Gita As It IsSrimad Bhagavatam, and other authorized scriptures strengthens our conviction and eliminates doubt.

  3. Association of Devotees
Keeping company with spiritually strong devotees boosts confidence and helps one remain steady in devotion.

  4. Performing Devotional Service
Engaging in bhakti-yoga—such as deity worship, prasadam distribution, and kirtan—connects us with Krishna and removes material fears.

The Qualities of a Fearless Person

A person who follows these spiritual principles develops divine qualities, as described in Bhagavad Gita 16.1-3:

abhayam sattva-saṁśuddhir
jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ

"Fearlessness, purification of one’s existence, cultivation of spiritual knowledge... these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature." (BG 16.1-3)

A devotee of Krishna naturally possesses fearlessness (abhayam) because they have complete faith in the Lord’s protection.

Practical Takeaway

Attaining this divine state of sobriety is generally not possible overnight but requires focused guidance, obedience and consistent efforts in the progressive direction. When the guidelines of the authorised scriptures are regularly followed under an able spiritual teacher this higher status of life is achieved by the grace of the Supreme Lord.

Systematic chanting of Hare Krishna Mahamantra…

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Is a time tested method for attaining this steady determination and along with this one must also study the books given by HDG Srila Prabhupada.

Conclusion

To be truly fearless, confident, and mentally strong, one must realize their eternal identity as a servant of Krishna. Through chanting, studying Bhagavad Gita, associating with devotees, and engaging in devotional service, one attains a fearless state of mind. As Krishna guarantees in the Bhagavad Gita, one who surrenders to Him need not fear anything in this world or beyond.

Let us follow the teachings of Srila Prabhupada and take shelter of Krishna to achieve true fearlessness and mental strength.
